How WarmZilla secured 14 published media opportunities through heating and air conditioning expert PR
WarmZilla
Heating and air conditioning expert PR
WarmZilla worked with Fair Public Relations on a six-month heating and air conditioning expert PR campaign.
The objective was to position founder Matthew Powell and Director of Operations Rhys Powell as credible media experts across clearly defined areas of heating, cooling and home services. Matthew brought more than 20 years of plumbing and heating experience, while Rhys contributed more than 15 years of industry experience alongside F-Gas and heat pump qualifications.
Over the six-month case-study period, WarmZilla secured 14 published media opportunities across six publication titles, including Yahoo! Life UK, The i Paper, Saga, London Daily News, Ideal Home and Homebuilding & Renovating.
The client
WarmZilla is a UK home services business combining trade expertise with technology to help homeowners arrange and manage heating, plumbing and wider home services.
For the PR campaign, Fair PR worked with two members of the senior team whose expertise covered different parts of the heating and cooling market.
Matthew Powell, founder of WarmZilla, started his career as a plumbing apprentice and has more than 20 years of experience building and scaling heating and plumbing businesses across the UK. He is a Gas Safe Engineer, NVQ Level 2 qualified in Plumbing and an experienced Central Heating Engineer.
Rhys Powell, Director of Operations, oversees a national network of more than 700 vetted WarmInstallers. He has more than 15 years of home-services experience and is F-Gas Certified, NVQ Level 2 qualified in Plumbing and a Heat Pump Qualified Installer.
That gave the campaign a strong base of genuine technical expertise across heating, air conditioning and wider home-comfort topics.
The opportunity
Heating and cooling are highly seasonal media subjects.
During colder months, journalists regularly look for credible experts who can comment on heating systems, radiators, energy use and household maintenance.
During warmer periods, the focus shifts towards keeping homes cool, air conditioning, portable cooling systems and ways consumers can make their homes more comfortable during hot weather.
WarmZilla had relevant expertise on both sides of that conversation, making it possible to build a year-round stream of media opportunities around topics the team genuinely understood.
The strategy
Fair PR created clearly defined media roles for both experts.
Matthew was positioned primarily around heating, boilers, home heating and energy, while Rhys was positioned around air conditioning, heat pumps and cooling.
This meant journalists could be matched with the most relevant spokesperson rather than using one generic expert across every topic.
The campaign focused on practical, consumer-facing subjects such as:
heating efficiency
underfloor heating
radiator problems
seasonal home heating
misleading heating advice
keeping homes cool during hot weather
portable air conditioning
improving air-conditioner efficiency
practical home-comfort advice
This allowed WarmZilla to contribute useful commentary to journalists while building a clear association with heating and cooling expertise.
The results
Over the six-month case-study period, WarmZilla secured 14 published media opportunities across six publication titles.
Coverage appeared in:
Yahoo! Life UK, The i Paper, Saga, London Daily News, Ideal Home and Homebuilding & Renovating.
The campaign generated repeat coverage in several publications, including four opportunities with Yahoo! Life UK and five with Ideal Home.
Topics ranged from underfloor heating and radiator problems to summer cooling, portable air conditioning and household energy efficiency.
The wider PR campaign remains ongoing.

Building Specialist Authority Through PR
One of the strengths of the WarmZilla campaign was that the company did not need to manufacture expertise simply to participate in media conversations.
Matthew and Rhys both had substantial hands-on industry backgrounds before moving into senior roles.
That gave Fair PR distinct areas of genuine expertise to build around.
It also meant journalists could receive commentary from a source whose professional background was directly relevant to the question being discussed.
For a home-services business, this type of expert-led PR can do more than generate individual articles.
Over time, repeated appearances around the same subjects can help associate both the spokesperson and the company with a particular area of expertise.
A Seasonal PR Model
The campaign also demonstrates why heating and air-conditioning PR can work particularly well as an ongoing activity.
The subjects consumers and journalists care about change throughout the year.
Spring creates opportunities around heating transitions and household maintenance.
Hot weather creates demand for advice about keeping homes cool and using air-conditioning equipment efficiently.
Autumn and winter bring heating, boilers, radiators, energy costs and cold-weather home maintenance back into the editorial cycle.
An ongoing campaign allows a business such as WarmZilla to participate in those conversations when they become relevant rather than relying on a single company announcement to generate attention.
The Campaign Continues
The six-month period covered in this case study generated 14 published media opportunities across six publication titles.
Fair PR's work with WarmZilla is ongoing, with the campaign continuing to build media visibility around credible heating, cooling and home-services expertise.
